We can feel the shade and composure while taking a rest at the places which are prepared around and at the center of the zoo. As we see, all is green. Accompanied by the sound of the water flowing in the stream which cuts in half the location and the twitter of birds and also the sounds of other animals - it really can give the heart and mind composure.

The zoo was an idea of Dr. Coonrad, a Dutch in 1936 and was open for public on 27 November in the same year. There were only 13 animals at that time. Carried out by government of the town, this zoo experienced some golden and dark time. The peak of the dark time was between 1990 – 1995. Seeing such a condition, DR Rahmat Shah was touched to manage it. After a tough negotiation finally the government of Pematangsiantar handed over the management of the zoo to Unitwin Indonesia Medan Limited with the contract period for 30 years since 1 September 1996.

Through total restoration little by little, the hard work and big budget began to indicate a positive result.

In 2003, The Zoo of Pematangsiantar got an acknowledgement from Persatuan Kebun Binatang Seluruh Indonesia Pusat as the best one in Sumatera. The latest predicate is the ten best zoo in the country. Because of this achievement Zoo of Pematangsiantar is referred as a zoo coordinator in the region.
